

I had the opportunity to go behind the scenes and read letters he both wrote and received that are not on public display. I spent a great deal of time in England at Byron’s Newstead Abbey. That is the long and the short of it, and that is what makes the Regency so very much fun to write and read about. The Regency was a time of hedonism behind the façade of respectability. People had affairs, young sweet maids got pregnant without the benefit of marriage, and others (like the famous Lady Caro) ran off in boys’ britches to play at highwaymen. Now and then, someone will say to me, “But wait, did they behave that way during the Regency Period?” The answer is: although I take dramatic license, oh yes, they did. I write about sassy heroines who break out of the mold and break the rules.
